Venice's 83rd edition hangs two Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement on the same Lido fortnight: George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn. Clooney received his Lion during the opening ceremony on Wednesday 2 September in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema, with Laura Dern giving the laudatio. Burstyn's Lion is dated Monday 7 September, tied to the screening of Maggie Gyllenhaal's short Flesh Impact. Two careers, two ceremonies, one festival that still knows how to honour longevity without whispering that the work is over.

Start warm. Lifetime Lions at Venice are not consolation prizes; they are the Mostra putting a sculpted animal in the hands of people whose filmographies already moved the medium. Clooney arrives as actor, director and producer — Barbera's citation walks ER to Syriana to Good Night, and Good Luck to Jay Kelly with the ease of a programmer who has watched the whole shelf. Burstyn arrives as an actress of rare intensity and truth, Barbera wrote, more than fifty years of American cinema, Oscar for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, the Exorcist shock still in the culture, Interstellar still in living memory. The Lido is saying thank you in public. That is allowed to feel good.

Burstyn's acceptance, also on the Biennale page, is pure delight: wow, favourite city, Golden Lion in her arms, honoured, happy, gratitude, wow again. She is 93 in the ANSA English filing that ran when the award was announced in July. The Lion lands on Monday 7 September beside Flesh Impact — Gyllenhaal's short dedicated to Marilyn Monroe on the centenary of Monroe's birth, with Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Sepideh Moafi in the cast. Johnson as Monroe at the height of fame; Burstyn as a Marilyn the world never got to see, per the Biennale note. Gyllenhaal is also Jury President of Venezia 83, so the short and the honour share a household name without collapsing into the same story.

Hosts matter for the tone of a Mostra night. Greta Scarano and Nicolas Maupas were announced to host opening and closing — Italian screen presence at the lectern for an international room. Laura Dern's laudatio for Clooney ties back to Jay Kelly, the Noah Baumbach picture they shared in competition at Venice 82. Continuity is a festival pleasure: last year's competition co-star reads this year's lifetime citation. Barbera remains the artistic director shaping both Lions and the programme around them.

Keep the Lions on the correct days. Tuesday 8 September's Sala Casinò 15:00 slot is a different honour: Luca Guadagnino's Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker award before the Out of Competition documentary Joie de vivre. Lifetime achievement can sound like a closing credit; on the Lido this week it sounds like an intermission with applause.
